Eiichiro Oda explains why Luffy is one of his biggest headaches in One Piece

Even though Eiichiro Oda has been writing the story of Luffy and his nakamas in One Piece for over 25 years, there are still certain things that put him in a bad mood. And no, it’s not the number of chapters he has left to write or a character that’s difficult to draw, but his own protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy .

Thanks to the Twitter account expert in One piece and its author, Sandman, we learned that Mugiwara is Eiichiro Oda’s biggest headache since his debut. The reason? It’s very simple: he is so powerful that Oda always has to stop him with obstacles to prevent the series from ending prematurely.

I have to put obstacles in his way and put all kinds of obstacles in his way, otherwise he will defeat the bad guy too quickly. “My characters act as if they have free will… When I force them to move for the sake of the story, my audience complains.”

Throughout the work, we were able to see how Oda uses this type of brakes again and again, Loguetown where he almost died at the hands of Buggy, until Here where he remains locked in a prison for several weeks before traveling to Onigashina to confront the Beast Pirates.

Without going any further, in the later chapters of the manga something similar happened and only now we saw Mugiwara act. We don’t know how long the series would have lasted without these obstacles, but it’s clear that we would have discovered where the One piece quite a few years ago.
