Une pièce

This was the One Piece creator’s first sketch with the Mugiwaras crew.

After more than 25 years of history, the members of the Straw Hats have become a living legend in the anime industry. Anyone familiar with One Piece, even if they’re not a fan, would easily recognize each of the characters, but some were going to be very different.

Thanks to the book One Piece Green: Secret Pieces, released in November 2010, we were able to see the sketch which Eiichirō Oda created for Luffy’s companions in their adventure along the Grand Line. While some barely changed with the release of the first chapters, others were very different, or even did not exist.

In the image we provide below, you can see that Luffy, Nami, Zoro, and Sanji barely changed once this started. One piece . However, Chopper was going to look much more like a real reindeer and with a more “human” body.

On the other hand, Franky was originally intended to have a similar appearance to the character on the left, since Oda refers to him in writings as “the ship’s carpenter”. You can also see Jinbei, whose fishman concept was always there, but his appearance was much simpler.

Another detail to take into account is the supposed Usopp that we can see behind Luffy. Why do we say “supposed”? Indeed, although he shares some design features, his appearance more closely resembles that of Blackbeard, suggesting that the gunplay may have come from that design. Brook more or less retains his skeletal appearance.

Last but not least, it is relevant to mention that initially there were no plans to include Robin. Instead, we got to see a never-before-seen character, one that Oda likely abandoned to create what was once Doña Domingo. Fortunately, the less eye-catching designs have improved. It is always curious to see what the author had in mind at the start for a work as important as One piece .
