How does Goal line technology work?
First put into service during the 2014 World Cup, the « goal line technology » is based on a high resolution video system itself composed of 7 cameras, each placed in the stands and scrutinizing the smallest detail of each goal. The data transmitted by these cameras are then transmitted in real time to two computers responsible for analyzing the data to know whether or not the ball has indeed crossed the goal line. The analysis data is then transmitted to the referee, through a watch dedicated to this use.
As such, and after many setbacks At the outset, the professional football league commissioned the German company Goal Control to install the system, or at least for its implementation in France. This company was not chosen at random, because the latter took care of the installation of this system in several World Cup stadiums. Installation of the system began in 2020, in July to be precise and all Ligue 1 stadiums should be able to benefit from it very soon.
An implementation cost that matches its performance
Like any cutting-edge technology, the expenses incurred for the installation of such a system are significant, judge for yourself: The installation of the system in a stadium costs on average 300,000 euros, which in total requires an investment of 5 to 6 million euros for all French stadiums.
