Step-by-step instructions to permanently delete your Gmail address

Are you tired of your Gmail account? Maybe you don’t use it anymore, or you’re wary of what Google knows about you.

Although Google doesn’t make deleting your Gmail account so easy that it could be accidental, it’s still a fairly simple process. If you’re sure you want to do this, here’s how to delete your Gmail account.

How to delete your Gmail account?

1. Go to your Google account page

2. Click the « Data and personalization » button.

On the left side of the screen, the third option down says « Data & Personalization. » Click on it to go to a new page.

3. Select « Delete a service or your account ».

Scroll down until you get to the section called « Download, delete, or schedule your data. » Click the “Delete a service or your account” button.

4. Determine what exactly you want to delete

A Google account is not limited to Gmail. There are different procedures if you want to get rid of Gmail but keep other Google services (like a YouTube account) and if you want all traces of your Google account to disappear.

Let’s start by removing the Gmail service. (If you want to delete your entire Google account, skip to step 7.) Click « Remove a service. »

5. Remove Gmail service.

You will be taken to a new page that looks like this. (You may need to log in to Google again for verification purposes).

Select Gmail and click the trash can icon on the right.

6. Provide a new email address and confirm it.

If you delete your Gmail account, you will need to give Google another address that belongs to you so that you can continue to use other services like Google Play, Docs or Calendar. (It doesn’t have to be another Gmail address).

On this email account, you will receive an email message that looks like this. You will need to click a link to confirm that you want to delete your Gmail account.

Read the text, check the box « Yes, I want to permanently delete [email protected] from my Google account » and tap « Delete Gmail ».

7. Read the warning page before deleting your Google account.

If you want all traces of your Google account to disappear, tap « Delete your account » on the page you were on in step 4.

8. Press the delete button

Google wants you to be absolutely certain that this is something you want to do, because it can’t be undone.

You need to check two boxes: One confirms that you agree that ongoing financial transactions on the account will still be paid, and the other confirms that you want to delete your Google account.

Then click on the “Delete Account” button.

9. You’re done!

And that’s it: Your Gmail account – and possibly your entire Google account, depending on your decision above – is gone. You will receive a final notification that looks like the one below.

But your Google account doesn’t have to be lost forever. On the last screen, Google says: « If you accidentally deleted your Google account, you have little time to try to recover it. » This is done through the account recovery site, but this link will not work for you if your deletion is more than two days old.
